When we think of colours I suspect it is the one that is your favourite you think of first. Is it red, blue, yellow, green? We all have different opinions. Have you ever given any thought, to the most universally used colour, interestingly its White. Perhaps that is something of a surprise, but after some research I have been richly rewarded by the multitude of information that the colour white embraces.

Where to start with the colour white, with clothes, in religion, in food? Popular phrases that include white, team sports, song titles, where to wear white the list is endless, but I will list just a few in this article.

White is the traditional colour for brides in the western world. It is also the colour of mourning in China, and parts of Africa, in the medical profession Doctors always have worn white, The Greeks used to wear white togas during the day, and in bed at night, to ensure pleasant dreams. White is also the best selling colour for Tee-Shirts

Food and drink. Vanilla ice cream bread, rice, staple diet of over 50% of all the people in the world. Flour, salt, sugar, potatoes, white fish, chicken, milk etc and perhaps the one most of us adults will recognize white wine!

Religion. White is used by priests, monks, nuns, and in the Jewish religion during the festival of Yon Kipper, the Rabbi dresses in white to restore a better relationship between God and his people. In the bible heaven is always represented as in, a blinding type of white light. The white lily represents the Madonna.

Sports. White is the chosen colour for Cricket, Judo, suits and white belts, Athletes traditionally wore white, Rugby and Football teams always used to wear white, as the clothes could be boiled when soiled and not lose the colour. The most famous football team in the world to wear all white is the famous Spanish club Real Madrid. White clothing turns translucent when wet.

Phrases & Sayings White goods is a description of household goods that include linens, sheets, towels, and appliances, which we use on a daily bases. I am sure we have all used a white lie at some time in our lives. To our children we may say eat your dinner it will put hairs on your chest. Or the tooth fairy who leaves money under your pillow, Father Christmas perhaps the biggest white lie , which we keep going for many years to conceal who buys their presents Eat your carrots it will help you see in the dark. Storks bringing babies, and the bogeyman, and perhaps the worst white lie, when the wife or girlfriend asks you do I look fat in this? It takes a brave man or a fool, not to bring out the white lie in that situation!

We have all heard the expression” that’s a white elephant” its origin came from Thailand where the albino variety is sacred. It was said that the night before the Buddha’s birth, his mother had a dream of a white elephant carrying a lotus flower. From that time on the white elephant has been worshipped, as a symbol of fertility and greatness, Because of their status they were never used for work or ridden to war like most other elephants. As these elephants were not productive the legend is, that they were used to punish someone who had offended the king. The king would give them a white elephant, they cost a fortune to keep, and in some cases it caused such a drain financially, that it could ruin the family that were given the gift. Even now the term” white elephant” is often used to describe a business venture or investment, that cost’s far more than it delivers, yet is impossible to sell or dispose of.

A white flag is used to denote surrender or coming in peace, a white feather is a symbol of cowardice, it’s a white Xmas the appearance of snow on Christmas day, white sauce normally made from stock, butter, flour, when we are running white hot, it means that at the time is all going well for us. Golfers have even had a putter named white hot.

Songs and lyrics including white.” A Whiter Shade of Pale” released in May 1967. The debut single by the British group Procal Harum, it reached number one in the UK singles chart, in 2009. It was at one time the most played song in public places in the UK. The lyrics were written by Keith Reid, who was at a party, when he overheard someone say to a woman,”you”ve turned a whiter shade of pale”, and the phrase stuck in his mind, and gave a starting point for the song.” White Christmas sung by ”Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney is perhaps one of the best known and loved songs. It conjures up the Xmas spirit of good cheer, and glowing fires, and all is well with the world, George Clooney is also Rosemary’s nephew.

Place names with White. I expect if we were asked to name one place or building, it would be the White House in Washington DC. The home of the President of the United States of America. For anyone who has visited there, it truly is an amazing experience. The house its self stands out on the Green Lawns and is as white as white could be. The thousands of motorists that commute daily into London on the A40 will pass an area now called the White City, Up until 1908 it was farmland; in 1908 the Franco-British Exhibition was built-in this period it was known as the Great White City. Due to the white marble cladding used on the exhibition pavilions, hence gave its name to this part of Shepards Bush. The White City Stadium was built for the Olympics in 1908, it was later turned into a greyhound racing track, and used for short periods by Queens Park Rangers football club. The stadium was demolished in 1985 to make way for the BBC White City building. The 1908 Olympics are commemorated with a list of athletes inscribed on the side of the building, and the athletics finish line is marked in the paving outside the building.

White in smell and taste. The scent of French Vanilla is a strong and creamy fragrance, and is calming, consoling, soothing, and purifying.” Coconut” was the original scent of the white coloured Magic Scents Crayons that were introduced in 1994 with food scents from Binney & Smith. Unfortunately they were so realistic that they had to be withdrawn from sale because kids were eating them, and replaced with non-food scents. White teas are the most delicate of all teas. Extra care is taken so that only the youngest leaves are used. The finest varieties are appreciated for their subtlety, complexity, and natural sweetness. White in the garden. White is considered a neutral colour in landscape design, and brightens up a garden in dark areas. White and pale flowers are more strongly scented than darker ones.

What else is white that we see and use daily. The poor abused white van man, white road markings. Our teeth, the whites of our eyes, tissues, paper, egg white, bathroom fittings, wool is white before the dying process White is present on 70%of all the flags in the world. White picket fences that give us a feeling of warmth and security.

White is a colour used by many in the entertainment industry, from pop groups, film stars; singers are all seen wearing the very popular white suit. The colour of white is a many splendid thing and ranges from warm incandescent to a cooler florescent. If time was a colour it would be a taste full off-white. When all colours combine in pure light energy the resulting colour is white, this is the physics of colour, white the most used colour in the world.
