For the past year I have been researching the colour white, in clothing, foods, drinks, buildings, and all manner of interesting facts, and have come across some White Trivia which i would like to share.

Buildings. The White House in Washington DC, was previously called The Presidents Palace, The Presidents House, The Executive Mansion, before being given its current name in 1901 by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1901.

The White Tower, in the Tower of London. Built by William the Conquer in 1066 .infamous for the murder of the two Princes by Richard the third. Prisoners held in the Tower included, Sir Thomas Moore, Thomas Cromwell, Anne Boleyn, and the Princess Elizabeth, who became Queen Elizabeth the 1st. The Tower also houses the Crown Jewels.

The Taj Mahal in India is built of White marble and was constructed in 1649 by an Emperor in memory of his wife, and is one of the seven wonders of the Ancient world. As is the Great Pyramid in Cairo. It was originally covered by casing stones and painted in limestone, as is the White House.

Whitechapel. The area of London owes its name to the white stone used to build the stone chapel of St Mary Matfelon in 1329. It is probably better known for the unsavory murders of seven prostitutes, in1888-91 by the killer nicknamed Jack the Ripper. The murders remained unsolved to this day, although many suspects have been put forward as the murderer.

Wiltshire White Horses. There are twenty four horses carved into the chalk hills in the UK Thirteen are in the county of Wiltshire and only the one at Uffington is regarded as Prehistoric origin. The White horse at Westbury legend has it, was built in 878AD by King Alfred to commemorate a victory over the Danes. Unfortunately the builder had the horse facing out of the town, instead of in, and Alfred had him be-headed.

Isle of Wight. Is so named because of its coastline, that has a chalk ridge running across the island. The island is also famous as the final home of Britain’s longest serving monarch Queen Victoria 1891-1901.also the longest serving Monarch in history, and had nine children. The poet Alfred Lord Tennyson of “The Charge of The Light Brigade fame. Charles Dickens wrote most of David Copperfield on the island.

“The War of the Roses” 1455-1485 fought between the “House of York” the White Rose, “ House of Lancaster the Red Rose.”. Victory went to the Red Rose represented by Henry Tudor, who”s dynasty ruled for 117 years. Crusaders Knights Templers wore White Mantles with distinctive Red Crosses.

Famous People Named White. The great romantic singer Barry White 1944-2003 best remembered for his hit I”m Gonna Love You a Little bit More”, and his Love Unlimited Orchestra. Paul Whitehouse the actor and writer, perhaps best known for his work with Harry Enfield, and the fast show. Whitehouse also created Stavros and the Loads Money characters for Enfield. James Warren White otherwise known as “Jimmy the Whirlwind White” ten times snooker champion, and second in six world championships. Jimmy is also known as the peoples champion and is one of the few to have had a 147 break. Well known actors actresses include Cilla Black who was Pricila White, David Jason of Fool”s and Horse”s fame, was David John White, Elton John was nearly a White christened Reginald Dwight .Nothing to do with White but interesting, John Cleesse was John Cheese, Eric slow hand Clapton was Eric Clapp, easy to understand need for change.

White Cliffs Of Dover in the UK we have two famous sites with White Cliffs. White Cliffs of Dover are perhaps the most well known, before air travel, if you were traveling to and from the UK, its likely that the first and last sight you would see is the White Cliffs of Dover During the second World war Vera Lynn sang the song “There will be Blue Birds over The White Cliffs of Dover” which became the tune that enabled the Brits to keep their chins up.

I have only scratched the surface of trvial facts about the colour white, it has all been so very interesting, researching the history of all the above subjects. I am in danger of becoming the pub bore with “did you know”.it may sound a cliche but i never realized how apparent White affects all our lives on a daily bases, if you give some thought to what is White in your day you will be very surprised.
