John Ansell has reported run away sales of white trousers or as the Americans say pants. Men’s white trouser sales have just taken off so to speak, and sales at www.perfectsuits.co.uk have tripled in the past three months. What is it with wearing white does it frighten some people, or are they just unfamiliar on how to carry off the look. After all white is a colour that can be associated with the medical profession, doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and religious ceremonies. What you need to do and be aware of, is when and where and what with to wear your trousers. White trousers are a great item to wear as a mix and match garment. You will look great on those casual dinner dates with white or pastel shirt a dark jacket jacket, and a pair brown or black loafers, and stylish black or brown belt. Trousers on their own are also a fashion statement, they can be worn with a nice long sleeved collared shirt for more formal occasions, polo shirt, black is the number, or the all-time statement a cool tee-shirt again black is the way. Where to wear there are no barriers anywhere, wear when you feel comfortable, holidays of course, cruising , dinner dates, special social occasions such as Henley Regatta which is one of the major social events on the English country calendar. Henley is situated on the banks of the River Thames and is held each year after Ascot and the fashion norm is, a boating blazer and white trousers, it would be hard to spot a rowing type without white trousers. Cowes week is also after Henley and the boating crowd move down to the Isle of Wight for Cowes Week, the pubs and restaurants are full with yachting types with their uniform of white trousers, and striped tops, and canvas shoes or loafers without socks. Socks or no socks? If you are somewhere hot and exotic I think no socks great call, especially when you can kick your shoes off and walk in the sand, it’s the best ever feeling, but if it’s a posh restaurant or cold I think socks are more appropriate. You can also buy the most amazing socks at the moment, for a special treat Ted Baker, or Paul Smiths are a fashion statement on their own. For the more adventurous man and to look really cool if you can get away with it, the Tom Cruise look of leather jacket white tee shirt and black loafers it can be a very enticing look to attract opposite sex. Other social events where white trousers with Jacket, or Blazer are acceptable, are at Polo, Horse Racing, Glorious Goodwood set in the rolling downs of the county of Sussex, with the champagne flowing, it is the epitome of the English social scene. Wimbledon also a major social event where all the players wear whites, and Jackets and coloured Blazers and white trousers are the normal dress code, last but not least, is Lords arguably the most famous Cricket Ground in the world where the members wear white and orange blazers with white trousers. Also Golfers are wearing white as a fashion item, and it seems that more and more people are wearing white trousers, either for leisure, sport, holidays, and social events, and they have tripled the sales of White trousers at www.perfectsuits.co.uk Question – are your white suits available in black? Thanks Razman Amir. Answer – yes we have other suits available – to view there please click here Morning suit v lounge suit was ignited by the British Prime Minister’s apparent decision not to wear a morning suit to the recent Royal Wedding. But what is the difference between wearing a lounge suit and morning suit, and where did the difference come from? The traditional morning suit is a black tailcoat jacket with grey pinstripe trousers and for formal occasions a grey waistcoat, for less formal such as Ascot or weddings more colourful waistcoats can be worn. The lounge suit is a set of garments made from the same cloth, jacket and trousers sometimes a waistcoat which is called a three piece. The jacket can be one two or three button depends what is in fashion at the time, whereas the morning coat only ever has one button. The Tailcoat started out as a riding coat in the early 18th century, it is believed that a English squire was uncomfortable in his frock coat, and had his tailor made it cut to fit over the horses flanks thus creating the tails which we still use today. The lounge suit emerged a short time after the morning coat in the mid-1870s, like the morning suit, the lounge suit developed as sportswear. From the rise of the middle classes in the 19th century, who did not have a dress code such as the aristocracy. The lounge suit came into its own after the first world war, when it became the dress for the middle and working class. Today the lounge suit is the uniform for smartness all over the world, from business, to pleasure, politicians, pop stars, it is the uniform of men all over the world. The morning suit though is now mainly worn by male members of a wedding party, the groom , fathers of the bride and groom, best man and ushers. Morning wear is also worn at other formal social events such as Royal Ascot, royal garden parties. Trooping the colour, and other royal events. It may also be worn at society funerals and memorial services. It also used to be worn to the theatre (hence the dress circle) Pupils at Eton still wear morning dress to school every day. A wedding today can cost £10,000 to £100,00 and the groom, parents, ushers would certainly wear morning dress, and very high end wedding, will ask for morning suits to be worn on the wedding dress code invitation. The debate on Cameron’s suggested refusal to wear morning dress may have had something to do with him trying to look more like the man in the street, and dressing down, which is strange, because he wore one every day at Eton College. In recent years it has become trendy to dress down, and it’s sometimes hard to judge a man by what he wears. When you look at old photos of sporting events, most of the spectators all wore a suit and tie to football matches, how times have changed. David Cameron though and the Royal Wedding is not a normal event, and this one was for the heir to the throne. If David had worn a lounge suit it may have been construed as being disrespectful, because he wears a lounge suit to work, why not make an effort to wear something he would not wear to his work place. On the day the establishment had its day, he wore a morning suit , so did Clegg, Beckham was also suitably attired, albeit with his medal pinned on the wrong lapel. So we had the establishment, pop stars, actors, politicians, Prime Misters past and present, all falling in line with the old order when it really matters. David could not be seen dressing down, the pop stars and footballers all had to be seen to dressing up. To summarise it would appear that when push comes to shove, as a nation we still are happy or nervous not to go against the norm, or do we like to dress up for the occasion? Ascot, weddings, special events. In my opinion I think that if asked or it is the required dress code, we should adhere to the rules, and make that day special for our host’s, and fellow guest’s on the day. John Ansell of Perfectsuits has compiled a list of trades and professions that wear Morning Suits. The United States Solicitor General wears a morning coat when he argues his case in the supreme court. Freemasons Commissioned Officer Bearers, Grand Lodge Officers sometimes wear morning suits. Classical Pianists also wear morning coats. Funeral Directors wear Morning coats, and most of us will have seen them walking in front of the hearse on the way to the Cemetery, or at the Crematorium, and especially at a funeral when the hearse is a carriage drawn by black horses. Toastmasters also wear a morning coat that can either be bright Red or also traditional Black, and they can be a very important part of a wedding reception, or big function. Perhaps the most widely worn morning suit is in the Hotel and restaurant trade, in major Hotels of the world it is common place for the doorman to wear some form of morning suit. The Savoy and the Ritz are the epitome of style and grace, and you would be disappointed if the waiter, or sommelier was not dressed in a tailcoat. At the Ritz hall porters wear blue frock coats, the receptionists in morning coats. At the Savoy the front of house staff all wear greys and blacks with white shirts, waistcoats, ties and a red rose. The restaurant uniform in the Savoy changes according to the restaurant, and the time of day, and the seniority of the staff. In the Thames Foyer restaurant, the waiters wear full morning suits, as they serve 150 afternoon teas every day. At The Ritz head waiters wear morning coats during the day, and change into dinner jackets in the evening. The other waiters wear tailcoats with a different colour waistcoat. In 1996 The Ritz had a major makeover of the uniform, and the new tailcoat worn by the waiters is based on the regimental dining coat of the Coldstream Guards. One of the most visible morning coat wearers is the Sommelier, who has this high profile job as he flits effortlessly between tables looking like he was born to the job in his immaculate morning coat. Perhaps the highest profile morning suit wearer is the quietly understated English Butler. A Butler is the quintessential representation of a Englishman’s manservant, who we see as working in a large country house, or as in the 19th century in large London houses. His job was to maintain certain standards for his master and for him to look and feel suitably attired, so for this he wore the traditional morning suit of black tailcoat, grey/black striped trousers. waistcoat, white shirt, collar and black tie. Is the morning suit a practical garment to wear to work? John thinks that yes it is, the herringbone material of the jacket is hard wearing, and very stylish on the eye. The black/grey striped trousers are again hard wearing, do not crease, and always hold their shape, and it is fairly resistance to stains. The overriding practically of the morning suit is that it looks and does what it says on the label. It is a garment that looks the part, on the butler, the waiter, the doorman, solicitor, sommelier, whoever dons the suit makes a statement, this is what I do, I do it well, this is my suit and badge in my chosen profession, and I am proud of what I do, and what I wear. Perhaps the two most well-known public schools that have morning suits as a uniform, are Harrow, and arguably the most famous Eton. Eton College, is better known simply as “Eton” it was founded in 1440 by King Henry V1. It is located in Eton, which is a short walk from Windsor, and a few miles from Slough, a town which had bad press from the poet laureate at the time John Betjeman. “Eton” has a long list of well-known ex pupils that include the current British Prime Minister David Cameron. Prince William, Harry, nineteen other British Prime Ministers, that included, Gladstone, Walpole, and the Duke of Wellington. Actors have included Damian Lewis, Hugh Laurie, Patrick Macnee, musician Humphrey Littleton, others include, Guy Burgees the spy, George Orwell writer, Henry More sculptor. “Eton” is probably the most famous public school in the world, and has been referred to as “the chief nurse of England’s statesmen” “ No other school can claim to have sent forth such a cohort of distinguished figures to make their mark in the world”. The Duke of Wellington is often quoted as saying that “The battle of Waterloo was won on the playing fields of Eton” Wellington attended” Eton” from 1781-1784, although it is also a thought that he said, while passing a” Eton” cricket match, “ There grows the stuff that won Waterloo” either way he was right as he won the battle of Waterloo against the French and ended the conquests of Napoleon Bonaparte. Uniform the school is famous for its traditions, including a uniform of black morning coat, waistcoat, false collar, and pinstriped trousers, originally with a top-hat and walking cane. Very similar to the dress code worn at Royal Ascot that is only a few miles away. “Eton” also used to be renowned for its use of corporal punishment, generally known as “beating” in the 16th century, Friday was set aside as “flogging day”. Beating was phased out in the 1980s, and the last beating or caning was in January 1984. Something of a change when John Keate, was Head Master from 1809-1834, when discipline was poor, he is supposed to have caned 80 boys in one day! “Eton” is also famous for the Eton Wall Game it does not seem to have any rules that many people understand.” Eton” also has an annual cricket match against Harrow School at Lord’s Cricket Ground and is the oldest fixture in the cricket calendar having been played there since 1805. In 1815, Eton College documented its football rules, the first football code to be written down anywhere in the world. Another famous school that has the morning coat as part of its school uniform is Harrow School again simply known as” Harrow”. It is situated in north west London, it was officially founded in 1572 by John Lyon under a Royal charter of Elizabeth 1. We also have to thank “Harrow” for inventing Football, squash, and rackets. Like “Eton” “Harrow” has a long list of traditions, and rich history, which includes, the use of boaters, morning suits, top hats and canes as uniforms. Its famous pupils have included eight former British Prime Ministers, including Churchill, Baldwin, Peel, and Palmerston. Numerous foreign statesmen, two Kings, 19 Victoria Cross holders, and many other famous names. Uniform the school has two uniforms, everyday dress, white shirt, black silk tie, grey trousers, black shoes, blue jumper, dark blue woollen jacket, and most notable a straw hat called a boater. Alternative uniform, Sunday dress, worn every Sunday and for public engagements, consists of a morning suit, black tailcoat, pinstriped trousers, black waistcoat, black tie, braces and white shirt. Again the dress code of Royal Ascot, which incidentally is the same as “Eton”. The “Harrow” uniform achieved national notoriety in 1937, when a photograph of two Harrovians in Sunday Dress being watched by three working class boys outside Lord’s Cricket Ground. The caption under the photo read “Every picture tells a story” and remains one of the most symbolic symbols of the class divide in the UK at that period of time. Fortunately though times have changed, and morning suits are now worn by all walks of life, to social events ,racing, Ascot, The Derby, it is usual for morning suits to be the normal dress at weddings to-day, and you do not have to go to “Eton, or “Harrow to wear the suit of the Toff’s. Scott Maslen is named sexiest soap hunk again. Scott Maslen the actor who plays Jack Branning in the long running soap EastEnders has beaten off tough competition to be named the Sexiest Male at the British Soap Awards 2011. Receiving his award from the pop group Sugababes, Scott thanked his Mum, and the makeup girls who spend hours in the morning on his face. It was a great night for EastEnders, as they also picked up Best Actress with Jessie Wallace portraying the role of Kat Slater, while Shane Richie and Jessie Wallace won the Best on –Screen Partership. Scott who portrays Jack Branning in the show is considered the good-looking and most successful Branning brother, Jack’s got a reputation as a smooth operator with an eye for the ladies. Scott is also a cool dresser and the white jacket he wore to the awards showed why the ladies find his obvious charms alluring. Eastenders is one of the longest running television soap operas, in the UK, first broadcast in Febuary 1985, and is currently one of the most watched programes on British TV. The show’s storyline centres on the domestic and professional lives of people who live in the EastEnd of London. Primarily the action takes place in Albert Square, a Victoran square of terraced houses. A pub called the Albert, a street market, various shops, businesses, a café, and a very famous launderete. Over the years the plot lines have seen many social and up to date problems, including rape, drugs, murder, incest, homosexualayt, lesbisam, racisam, alcoholism, kidnapping, incurable illness, mental illness, infidelity, prison, their have not mant taboo issues they have not tackled. EastEnders is one of the UK’s highest-rated programmes, and is regulary the most watched programme on TV. It competes with other well known programmes, Emmerdale, a soap about a small farming village in Derbyshire, but its main compeditor is a another soap Coranation Street, which sometimes sees them going head to head for its audience. Coranation Sreet is based in a fictional Street in Manchester, and in some ways mirrors EastEnders but with Northern accents, Coranation Street arguably is more toungue in cheek, same issues but treated in a more lighthearted manner. Eastenders has been acused of being to dour, and is arguably so. Both shows though have memorable signature tunes, and you woud be hard pushed to find anyone in the UK who at some time had not heared one or the other, and at Christmas time both Soaps have mega viewing figures when major story lines culminate at peak viewing times over the holiday period. EastEnders from this backdrop we have the actor Scott Maslin who portrays Jack Branning, this man has no morals when it comes to who he charms into bed. He’s good looking, lock up your daughters tye, who always gets what he wants in the end. So who was the man who collected the award for the sexiest man in a soap opera for the third year on the trot, was it Jack? was it Scott? what we do know he exuded charm, confidence, authority, was it what he was wearing a white jacket? A man in a white jacket is the epitome of style, cool in command of all around him, Jack Scott. It is universally recognized that the late King Edward V11 gave name to this garment. Edward V was born on 9 November 1841 and died on 6 May 1910. He lived an extremely flamboyant, and some might say decadent life, much to the chagrin of his mother and father Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. He was heir apparent to the throne longer than anyone else in history, and made up for it by living the good life. His main occupation seemed to be chasing after women be they married or not, he himself married on the 10th March 1863 his wife was Alexandra, daughter of the future King of Denmark. He was fairly young at 21 she only 18. His mistresses and their were many, included the actress Lillie Langtry, Lady Randolph Churchill, mother of Winston Churchill, Daisy Greville, Countess of Warwick, actress Sarah Bernhardt, he liked attractive and intelligent women and it was rumored to have had over 50 relationships. One of his affairs with Alice Keppel produced a great-granddaughter, Camilla Bowles, who married the present Prince of Wales which in its self created controversy because she was a Catholic. In 1869, Sir Charles Mordaunt, a British Member of Parliament, threatened to name Edward as co-respondent in his divorce suit. Edward was called as a witness in the case, but was not named, although it was proved that he did call on the lady while her husband was sitting in the house. It is rumored that Edward used to have a carriage waiting out the back of the houses he visited and was whisked away at the slightest hint of danger. His mother Queen Victoria blamed Edward for the death of her husband Albert, Albert had visited Edward when he was younger to reprimand him of his ways with an actress, Nellie Clifton, Albert died two weeks after the visit. Queen Victoria was inconsolable, she wore mourning clothes for the rest of her life, and she was reported to have written to her daughter, “I never can, or shall, look at him without a shudder, because of his frivolous, indiscreet, and irresponsible lifestyle. When though he did ascend to the throne in 1901 he proved to be a popular King, he donated his parent’s house, Osbourne on the Isle of Wight, to the state, and it was claimed that he was the first heir to succeed to the throne in credit. At a time of widespread anti-Semitism, Edward openly socialized with Jews. Edward refurbished the royal palaces, and reintroduced all the traditional ceremonies, his mother had not carried on, and was a supporter of the arts and sciences. He was also interested in foreign affairs, naval and military matters, and spoke several languages, and took annual holidays abroad. He also visited the pope, and was the first British Monarch to visit the Russian Empire. Edward was related to nearly every other European monarch and came to be known as the “uncle of Europe” He was also a great family man and doted on his children, and grandchildren. He had little interest in politics, but for his time he was very liberal, and during his reign he said that the use of the word “nigger” was disgraceful, despite it being in use at the time. He was not keen on women getting the vote. Although he had very little in common with most of his subjects, his personal charm, sense of justice, made him a popular figure. Fashion he made wearing tweed, Homburg hats and Norfolk jackets fashionable, and the tradition of leaveing the bottom button of his waistcoat undone. He also gave his name to the Prince Edward morning suit that is know popular at weddings today, and is a compromise between the traditional morning suit and the more modern three-quarter Prince Edward. |
