White Uniforms In Team Sports

White uniforms in team sports, the most well known would be the English game of Cricket, played by twenty two players eleven on each side, it’s a game that is to some beyond comprehension. In a test match the game is set to last for five days and at the end there still may be no result, so you can see why some people find it hard to understand.

  1. Cricketers in test matches wear cricket whites, these are also known as flannels, originally flannels were exclusively white or cream, today though in the shortened one-day game players wear multi coloured kit.

  2. Why then a white uniform? Is it so either side are able to see the red ball, against white clothes, or is it that white reflects the sun and the heat during the summer months, whatever the reason, to see twenty two men or women run out onto a green field on a summers day is a sight to behold.

  3. Football the most watched, played, and popular sport on the planet, one of the biggest clubs Real Madrid wear an all white strip, Real were formed in 1902 and are reported to have 228 million supporters worldwide.

  4. Real Madrid’s home ground is called the Santiago Bernabau and used to hold 120,000 fans but under new UAFA rules it now only houses 80,400.
  5. Real Madrid holds many records in competitions and have won more European Cups than any other club, of course now the European Cup is better known as the Champions League.
  6. Real Madrid have also had many of the best players that have laced up a pair of boots, they include, Di Stefano who arguably could be included as one of the best players ever, Frenc Puskas, Zidane Zidane, and of course at the moment they have just paid a world record for Ronaldo who could turn out to be the best yet.
  7. Atletico Madrid are there local rivals, but the games between Real and Barcelona are perceived to be a matter of life and death, not just because of rivalry but also language.
  8.  Also small piece of trivia, Real Madrid are one of the few clubs of which the members are the owners.
  9. Other English football teams that have worn all white strips have included, Bolton Wanderers 1969-1971,Leeds United 1961-1976,Totenham Hotspurs 1985-1987 sponsor Holsten, and 2007-2008,Derby County 1965-1966.
  10. Rugby Union the English Rugby teams strip was entirely white from 1871-1990,more trivia the game of rugby was developed at Rugby school hence the name, and all teams used to wear white because it could be boiled washed to keep it clean.
  11. In summary, white has and is one of the most popular colours for team sports, originally because it was easy to keep them clean, with the advent of non running man made materials other colours have become more readily available but white has stood the test of time and is still a colour in demand.
