Sportsmen In White

White is synonymous with a variety of sports that predominately wear white.

  1. Tennis players have to wear white clothes at Wimbledon perhaps the best known lawn tennis tournament in the world.
  2. Wimbledon was founded in 1868 as the All England Croquet Club and in 1875 Lawn Tennis was introduced and other than a few changes the rules drawn up then have lasted to the current day.
  3. Small piece of trivia the then lawns were laid out in such a way that the principle court was in the middle with all the others courts around it hence The Centre Court.
  4. In 1922 Wimbledon moved from Worple Road to its present site in Church Road, and has survived many ups and downs, to become the most prestige’s tennis tournament in the world.
  5. Well known English players have included Fred Perry the last English player to win the competition, and everybody’s favourite Tim Henman much loved but could never quite bring home the bacon.
  6. Someone who could bring home the bacon is Roger Federer who won his first junior title in 1998,and has gone on to win more Championships at Wimbledon than any other player, his sporting hero’s growing up were Boris Becker, and favourite player was Pistol Pete Sampras.
  7. What else makes Roger stand out from the crowd, he really sartorially personifies Mr Cool who can but sits back and admire how he looks in his White Jacket that he wears when he collects the Wimbledon trophy, he is the best and he looks the best.
  8. Also maybe a little known fact regarding Roger is that he is very generous with his time and money, and has set up the Roger Federer Foundation which supports disadvantaged children in South Africa. Where in 2005 he made a surprise visit to townships in Port Elizabeth, were on his behalf his parents opened a multipurpose sports complex consisting of two tennis courts a basketball court netball and football pitch, plus many other fundraising and charity able projects.
  9. Roger has also won the overseas BBC sports personality of the Year in 2006-07, he is married to Mirka Vavinec a former player, and has twin daughters, he speaks English, Swiss, French and Swedish – with no end to his talents, also another piece of trivia had a Stamp released in 2007 in his birthplace of Basel.
  10. In my opinion Tennis players look much smarter in all White and other venues have allowed players to wear whatever they like, but Wimbledon and Roger will always be my Venus in all White.
